Monolithic High-power Waveplates
Monolithic high-power waveplate is a device used to modulate light waves, based on the polarization rotation effect and total internal reflection.
Monolithic high-power waveplates typically use wafers made of special optical materials, such as germanium or silicon. These materials have high refractive indices, enabling total internal reflection of light waves.
When linearly polarized light waves are incident perpendicularly to the surface of the wafer, total internal reflection occurs within the wafer due to the change in the angle of incidence. When the linearly polarized light waves reach a specific critical angle along the internal angle, partial reflection and partial transmission occur.
By controlling the thickness and refractive index of the wafer, the critical angle of the linearly polarized light waves can be adjusted, thereby changing the ratio between reflected and transmitted light intensities. This allows for the modulation of the polarization state of the light waves, thus functioning as a modulation device.
