The working wavelength of silicon is from 1.2µm to 8µm. The density of silicon substrate is low, which is half of that of other materials or zinc selenide materials. It is relatively light in weight, and the optical components made of silicon are harder than germanium. Silicon has high thermal conductivity and low density, making it suitable for making laser reflectors. However, due to its strong absorption at 9µm wavelength, it is not suitable for carbon dioxide laser transmission applications.

Silicon planar windows are parallel plane plates that are often used as protective films for electronic sensors or external environmental detectors. Silicon (Si) is suitable for infrared applications.
